My grandfather, Walter von Sanden, well known author and environmentalist |
My grandmother, Edith von Sanden, well-known sculptress. Those are some of her pieces behind her. |
When writing my historical novel, a work of fiction based on my family's real experiences in East Prussia during World War II, my grandparents served as studies for the story's characters.
Their story begins in the dead of one wintry night when they must make a terrifying and raw flight from their home in East Prussia. Theirs is a history many families share. I write to tell of how a proud man and his wife, an artistic woman suffering from severe depression, must make their way, with thousands of others, through the ice forest of East Prussia to safety.

As a child I was not interested in my roots. This changed when I met Marina and read her mothers and her first book " Sand in my shoes". My roots are in Prussia too as I know now and I remember my mother telling me about her vacation she spend at her grand parents place in Prussia.

Marinas new novel should be translated in German for those, who would love to read it but can't because it's written in English.
Good luck

For those who ever come to the East Prussian museum in Lüneburg,Germany: There you can see some sculptures of Edith von Sanden, Marina's grand mother. The museum is very interesting!!!

Marina, I am so proud of you. You have great courage to have researched and faced the horrific experiences that your dear ancestors had to face. The photos of them fleeing with all of the possessions they could carry is heart breaking. It is time for your book. You have remained true to your inner directive to tell their story.
